Holy Spirit

Wild Good Chase

“The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” John 3:8 (NLT)

My friend Jen and I went off for some church training. We attend Cohorts on church multiplication and planting. We go because we feel that God gives us next steps in the plan he has for our churches and for us as leaders.

We attended one of the Cohorts last week in Kansas. We debated not going (because of Covid) but God showed up in so many ways as we registered for these courses and prayed about this trip, we felt He was giving permission. As we were flying to Kansas, Jen looked at me and said “When I was packing, I felt the distinct impression that I should pack for another day.” My eyes widened. I’ve had these God impressions before and they are no joke. She went on to explain that she discounted the idea because we were flying home on Thursday but she had the impression again so she threw some extra clothes into her suitcase. I asked her jokingly why she didn’t call me so I could pack extra too! Then I said, “I hope we don’t get stuck in Kansas.”

Thursday morning as we were packing, I remembered what Jen said. I filled up my contact case and put it in my purse. I don’t normally do that but I figured...you know. We might get stuck somewhere.

We boarded the plane, pushed back from the gate and proceeded to sit on the tarmac for 2 hours waiting to take off. High winds in Chicago (our connection) were grounding all air traffic. You guessed it, we missed our connecting flight. As the people around us grumbled and complained, we were at peace. We knew that God had gone before us and no matter what happened, He was in it. We decided in that moment to be on the look-out for whatever it was that God was doing. This peace stayed with us even as we landed in extremely high winds with the plane leaning too far to the right and too far to the left.

We checked into our hotel with no bags, no clothes not even the extra clothes Jen packed, and no toiletries. We did have the food we packed for supper because our layover would be too short to eat and my contact case. We found out that the airline was routing us to Ogdensburg, NY first and then home. Who the heck ever flies into Ogdensburg, NY? We prayed that God would lead and if we could be of service to Him in some way that He would show us.

In the middle of the night I woke up and thought “This is a wild goose chase.” I chuckled because in one of Mark Batterson’s books he tells that in some language (I think it’s Gaelic but I can’t remember for sure) that they refer to the Holy Spirit as the “Wild Goose.” If you think about it, that is so appropriate. If you are chasing a Wild Goose, you zig this way and zag that way trying to catch him. You put all your effort into it but it’s really the Goose that is in control. I think following the Holy Spirit is like that. As Jesus said, we don’t know where He comes from, we don’t know where He’s going, we just know He was there and because of that, we follow.

The rest of our flight was uneventful....except we spent more time talking to God and looking for where He was at work. We don’t know why God did what He did with our flight. We don’t know why He told us in advance that He was going to allow it. We just know He did.

We got to see the Wild Goose for a brief moment and it totally changed the trajectory of our trip. We knew we were right where God wanted us and that with Him in it, no matter what happened, it was all good.

I want to go on more Wild Goose Chases. I want to experience the Holy Spirit over and over again in my life. Even when I end up scratching my head wondering why God did that, there is nothing better. Ever.

Three in One

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NIV)

Lately I’ve been spending time with someone who wants to know Jesus more (via ZOOM, of course). We’ve been talking through questions he has. This past week one of the questions was about the Trinity; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

A lot of us have “grown up” with this concept but have you ever tried to explain it to someone who is just hearing it for the first time? One woman I was sharing this with was raised practicing Hinduism. She grasped the concept of multiple Gods but didn’t quite grasp the “One God” concept right away. Another person was raised in Islam. This concept was really hard for him.

As I was praying, an idea popped into my head. Now, I am not a theologian but this really seemed to help me get my arms around how to explain it.

Imagine you were suddenly standing before God. What would you do? My first inclination would be to drop to my knees or my stomach or crouch into a ball. To get as low as I possibly could in deference to the power that was before me. I would want to pay homage and show that I, in awe, understood who this was.

Imagine now that you were standing before Jesus. What would you do? In my mind I would sit at his feet with my head on his knee and talk to him and share with him as he stroked my hair or I would sit next to him leaning in, sharing my heart and listening for his.

And finally, imagine you were encountering the Holy Spirit. What would be your posture? I imagine myself standing on a mountain with beautiful vistas surrounding me with my arms wide open taking in deep breaths of the beauty that encompassed me.

Before each one the posture is different. Before each one the access is different. But with all of them, there are many things in common. There is a peace in my soul; there is reverence and awe. There is a mind blowing feeling of acceptance and a deep down understanding that this is truth. There is no fear. There is only a love that I cannot truly comprehend but it satisfies my soul.

As I said, I am not a theologian but to me, this is in a non-theologian way to understand the Godhead. You may imagine this differently. What are your thoughts?

What Is It For?

But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (GNT)

Have you ever prayed to receive the Holy Spirit? Have you ever prayed that you would get a huge anointing of the Spirit? Have you prayed it for yourself or others? I have.

I pray for an anointing of the Holy Spirit all the time. I pray for a super duper portion. I pray it for me and for people I know. Heck, sometimes I even pray it for my whole church and for all churches all over….for God’s people.

Why do we pray this? I know I pray it because I want Holy Spirit power. Key word there is probably power. I want the Holy Spirit to move in such a powerful way that people know he’s in it without any doubt.

As I read Acts 1:8 I got stuck. I got stuck on what we are supposed to do when the Holy Spirit comes on us. It says When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power (WOOHOO!), and you will be witnesses for me everywhere. (WOOHOOs inserted are mine.)

There you go. I can be filled with the Holy Spirit and I can be filled with power. But wait. What am I supposed to do with it? Is it to make my ministry successful? Is it to get the church worship service to move people? Is it to get people dialed into my denomination or to grow the numbers attending my service? What is it for? The Bible says it is so I will be a witness for Jesus.

The definition of witness is to give evidence of something or to have personal knowledge of something. So, when we receive the Holy Spirit, we are supposed to share what we know personally, because we’ve experienced it. We are supposed to be out there, telling people about our Jesus and showing them how much he loves them. And, we are supposed to do it everywhere we go.

I know there is so much more to this than my brain can comprehend but I am now clear on something. When I pray for the Holy Spirit, I understand why I will receive it. I understand what I’m supposed to do when I do receive it. Share Jesus. Simple, yet powerful.

In My Little Space

Each one repaired the section immediately across from his own house. Nehemiah 3:28 (NLT)

Our world is a messy place. All you have to do is read or listen to the news and you can see that sin is rampant. There are so many hurting people. There is so much that is broken. Paying attention to all that is wrong can be extremely overwhelming.

I am tempted sometimes to give up. There is too much to do. Too much pain and there is no way I can make a difference. How could I possibly help?

But this is Satan’s lie. As with Nehemiah, if we each would rebuild in our area, we’d make a huge impact on the war against evil. My neighborhood looks different than your neighborhood. The people I see every day are not the people you see. That’s the wonderful thing about sharing the Gospel and growing God’s kingdom.

If each of us would make an effort where we are in our little space, more and more people would be reached. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will encounter people who need the gifts we have to offer. Not our spouse’s gifts, not our coworker’s gifts, not a fellow Christian’s gifts but our gifts. The perfect gift in the perfect place at the perfect time.

That’s what God does. He asks us to work right where we are and then he sends the people that need to be loved.

What's Your Favorite Fruit?

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

The fruit that the Holy Spirit grows in our lives is:

love
joy
peace
patience
kindness
goodness
faithfulness
gentleness and
self-control

Which three of these would you like to see more of in your life?
Why?

How do these become more evident in your life?

Hint: Relationship

He's Got This

The Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:27 (NIV)

The other day at Bible Study we started discussing the Holy Spirit. Of course, you can't do that in one sitting...or probably a hundred because there is too much to Him. But that's another Thought!

The next day, I came across this text and it brought me back to our discussion. We often feel like we are alone in our stuff.  We are alone in our decisions. We are alone in our problems. We are facing the emotional upheavals by ourselves. We forget.

We forget that when we chose Jesus, when we were baptized that we were filled with the Holy Spirit. We forget that he is a part of our lives and is very, very involved. The Holy Spirit is always working on our behalf doing the will of God.

When I ponder this, well, it kind of blows my mind. As I am processing through some tough decisions at work, he is there guiding me. When I am praying about a tiff I had with someone, he is convicting my heart. When I am facing a problem that is way bigger than I can handle on my own, he is working on my behalf in the background. And when I am dreaming about the big dreams God has placed on my heart, he is showing me step by step how to get there. Like I said, blows my mind.

If we know that the Holy Spirit is involved, is intervening on our behalf working the plan out according to what God wants (even if we can't see it right this second), shouldn't we be confident in what's happening in our lives? I guess my next question is Do we believe it?

Are You Talking Too Much?

And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. Revelation 12:11 (NLT)

The "him" that was defeated in this text is Satan. WOOOHOOO! He is defeated for all times by the blood of the Lamb! But notice what else is used to defeat him?  Our testimonies.  What is a testimony? A testimony is another word for our story.

Each of us has a story. Each of us has events in our lives that are unique to only us and that no one else can tell.  What's really amazing is that God uses these all the time! He wants you to share who you are with other people so they can see him shine through.

Have you made a mistake where you've had to live through the consequences?  That's your story. Have you seen God show up in those failures and consequences?  That's your story. Have you listened to his voice even when it didn't seem sane and watched him do only what God can do and work it all out?  That's your story! What I find so mind blowing is that God uses our upside-down, messy stories for his glory.

How do you share your story?

  1. Pray.
  2. Keep your ears and eyes open. If you pray and ask God to send someone for you to share with, he will.
  3. If you sense that you are to share, pray again. Ask God what he wants you to share.  Sometimes, you aren't supposed to share anything but only listen and let them know you understand.
  4. Ask questions. Until you understand where the person is coming from, you don't have a clue what to share. Listen. No agenda. And then pray some more. God has a reason for this encounter. Let him lead.

One final thought. Remember, your only job is to pray, listen and share IF God says. The outcome of that encounter is in the Holy Spirit's hands, not yours. Get out of the way. Let God be God.

Mission Possible

In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.

You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness. Ephesians 4:1-6 (MSG)

These are your instructions for today. The only way you can do them is by keeping in touch with the Holy Spirit. Each time you feel that you want to quit or slack off, each time you want to take off on your own path and do your own thing, stop and pray. When it gets hard. Stop and pray. And when you find joy in the journey, stop and PRAISE!

Happy Friday Everyone!
